After weeks of snow and then rain and then icy roads, today the sun came out, the temperature was in the 40s and for the first time this winter I felt that the spring would come as it always does. I just read a wonderful book called The Dirty Life by Kristin Kimball about “Farming Food and Love.” John Winkler our neighbor in Clove Valley told be about it and I even had a strange connection to it as my first job out of school was working with an architect who was Kristin’s husband’s grandfather.

I remember when I was 11 or 12 going down to Gordon Andrews farm here in Clove Valley and getting a gallon of milk to drag back up the road to our house. It was a metal milk bucket with a top which kept it from splashing and my mother would put it in the fridge until morning and then skim the fat off the top.
