I put the post below because I plan to listen to WWVA, the Friendly Voice from out of the Hills of West Virginia, on my trip out west. When I was in high school I played in a bluegrass band which was made up of four very untalented musicians. What we lacked in skill we made up for in enthusiasm. One of our group Dave Freeman started County Records and Rebel Records, both successful country music labels, based in Virginia where he still lives. I heard he became a pretty good mandolin player but other than an occasion email we haven’t kept in touch.
WWVA was a 50,000 watt station that you could hear all over the eastern part of the country and Lee Moore was the nighttime disc jockey and guitar player. His best song was The Cat Came Back which you can still find on you tube, and in a new link to this site.
They advertised everything from Day old chicks to illustrated bibles .
We all got started by buying the Doc Williams Guitar Course for I think $3 including shipping and learned to play that way. Some of the most famous country bands started on the Wheeling West Virginia Jamboree which was on WWVA every Saturday Night.. Still is.
