I was at a flea market last week and there was a guy there selling old post cards from Dutchess County. Many were of old buildings in Poughkeepsie which were of interest but the below caught my eye and I couldn’t help buying it. Dutchess County up until the 1970s was pretty much apple orchards, dairy farms and IBM. At one time I think IBM had 40,000 people working in the county, now down to about 12,000.
Most of the apple orchards were closer to the Hudson where I guess the warmer weather was conducive to the growing season. But what were known as the back lots, those large areas closer to the Connecticut border were dotted with dairy farms. Most are now gone, some replaced with horse farms, or just country houses with open fields but there was a time when Candy and Sandy were as common as the horse farms are now.
