How many of my readers have even heard of that famous trio?
There was a great article in the New York Times today about Christopher Tinker who is car mechanic is Baltimore and the great grandson of Joe Tinker who was the shortstop on that Chicago Cubs team that won the World Series in 1917 and 1918. They were the last Cubs team to do so.
The article is long so I will just put the link below for those who are interesting in a great human interest story. But for those who don’t know they were the most famous double play team in the history of the sport
But the trio really became famous because of Franklin P Adams, a popular newspaper columnist in the New York Evening Mail. He wrote:
“These are the saddest of possible words: Tinker to Evers to Chance,” who put the poem together on his way to the Polo Grounds to watch the Cubs play the Giants. From there, six lines followed:
Trio of bear cubs, and fleeter than birds,
Tinker and Evers and Chance.
Ruthlessly pricking our gonfalon bubble,
Making a Giant hit into a double,
Words that are heavy with nothing but trouble:
Tinker to Evers to Chance.
But before I move on to other subjects I must speak about two baseball fans, Henry “Whitey” Graff and my father. They were both New York giants fans. Professor Graff is a famous presidential historian from Columbia University who attended the all star game at the Polo Grounds in 1934 that Carl Hubbell pitched and in order struck out Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons and Joe Cronin, five future Hall of Famers. I guess “Whitey ” who is in his 90s may be last one around who was there for that famous game.
My father used to regale me with stories of immortal Giant players and others who were the best in his day. Christy Mathewson “Big 6” and his battery mate Roger Bresnahan or Mordecai “Three Finger” Brown or the one I always liked to hear about was “Iron Man” Joe Maginnity who pitched both ends of double header three times in a month and won all six games for the Giants! They sure don’t make ’em like they used to! The picture on the right is 3 finger brown and as you can see, he is missing his index finger and his middle finger was badly damaged also.
