I don’t know much about the history of the building, but the Elting Building is on Main Street in Poughkeepsie and looks like it has been there since the 1880s. I had a meeting in town today and finished about 6 o’clock. I went into the Brasserie in the old Elting Building and had a great dinner at the bar. The place really is a period piece, looks like it’s been there forever although it has only been open for a few years. Thankfully they seem to be doing well in the center of what used to be the busiest street in the Hudson Valley but like all the river towns, Poughkeepsie has come on hard times.

The restaurant was voted the best restaurant in the Hudson Valley and deserves the reward. I only asked one question of the bartender, well actually two. the first one was  “Do you live in Poughkeepsie?” She answered yes on Vassar Road and the second question was “Is the chef the owner?” The answer to that was yes also and you could tell from the food and service. I wont get into the menu and what I ate, but I assure you it is worth the trip! That is unless you are one of my readers from Hong Kong or Kentucky.

Their card is a copy of an old post card of Main Street in Poughkeepsie in 1912. Most of the old buildings are there still but of course the trolley car is gone.
