I received a report with photographs from a friend and professional newspaperman and editor who lives in Amenia.

I’m old enough to remember when the Hudson Valley was dairy farms and apple orchards. But about 15 years ago many of the farms were replaced by horse farms, which was not bad but lately another phenomenon has taken place, the dreaded tear down.

Doc Hammond was a terrific vet in Millbrook and a nice man. He probably bought his farm in the 1960s for not much more than a cup of coffee. He died several years ago of prostate cancer and his farm was just sold for $9,000,000. His farm in Smithfield was a real old time beauty, needed some paint but otherwise a fine old farm with  a couple of hundred acres, dairy barns, he was milking 100 cows ,and a tired but wonderful old farm house. Just take a look.
