Ernie and Anna are from Titchfield near Portsmouth in the South of England. They come every year and stay at the farm for a month. Ernie is the dog whisperer I have written about before. Yesterday they used two English expressions that I had never heard of and had to look up.
The Rag and Bone man was a guy who used to go around, sometimes with a horse drawn cart and collect old rags to sell. Anna remembers as a child that the Rag and Bone man always gave out a live goldfish and so the kids would collect throwaway things for him. Ernie allowed as how the fish usually died a few days later. Ernie then talked about the mudlarks, young kids who used to dive into the mud to retrieve pennies that the sailors threw into the water. The mud was four feet thick but the kids always came up with a coin.
