A reader sent the below photograph which indeed tells the story of bird feeders and the claim that they can be made squirrel proof. Several years ago we stopped putting bird feeders out because we saw a bear ripping one down and eating all the seeds. Then we decided to only put the feeders out when the bears were hibernating. The squirrels always somehow get to them. I put up a new feeder a few weeks ago guaranteed to be squirrel proof. We are watching and waiting.

  1. We’ve had success with a feeder whose support for the birds rotates if something like the weight of a squirrel perches on it. But all this raises the question, why are birds more worthy of being fed than squirrels?
