This Saturday the Kentucky Derby will be run and it will still remain on my bucket list as I wont be able to attend.
My late cousin Joe Hirsch covered fifty Kentucky Derbys for the Daily Racing Form and the Media Center at Churchill Downs is named after him.
There are two horses I will be watching and one I will be rooting for. The horse to watch is California Chrome who will probably go off as the favorite. He won the Santa Anita Derby and would be the first California horse to win since 1962 when Decidedly won. California Chrome’s trainer was born in Brooklyn but moved to California when he was seven. He is now 77 and ready to go. My friend Jay who is the executive columnist of the Daily Racing Form is from California and his wife is Julie the first and only woman jockey to win the Belmont. However even though Art Sherman the trainer was born in Brooklyn I am going for another horse, Wicked Strong.
The other horse I will be watching is Wicked Strong owned by a syndicate based in Boston. The name Boston Strong was already taken so they named the horse Wicked Strong, a good name. My interest in the horse is purely personal. I got an email from a friend I met in the Marines. Danny has been investing in a horse syndicate for years and never has shown much for it but this year for the first time in 20 they have a real contender and some of the investors are going out to watch the race. Wicked Strong won the Wood Memorial and has a real chance. I’ll be watching and pulling for him.
