Ortona in Abruzzi Italy has a Canadian cemetery, honoring the Second World War Dead. The battles along the Gustav Line from Anzio to Ortona were vicious long lasting brutal and among the most deadly of the Second War. This summer I visited the cemetery with an Italian cousin Raimundo who has a great knowledge and interest in the history of that period. Many of the graves were from other British troops some New Zealand, Australia as well as Canadians.
Two of the grave sites were particularly moving. One of four tombstones together, four New Zealanders who died the same day in the same battle, and one lone Jewish grave of a Canadian sapper.
